OUR HISTORY

The birth of our club was not an easy process. In 2007 the motor club was created, a club completely removed from the world of Formula Student. Its first objective was the construction of a functional Kart, which was carried out by Ignacio Slocker and Miguel Montes, two fourth-year students. With this same Kart they won the scholarship awarded by Fernando Alonso to 12 students to study at Oxford Brookes University (UK).

The following year a team of five people, including those two students, decided to build a prototype car (FUEM 01) to compete in the Formula Student race.

With hours of work, not just from the students but also with the help of professors, and a low budget, they managed to reach the first competition at Silverstone in 2009. The final result achieved with the car and the competition is owed to the efforts of the students themselves. Upon arrival, many of the faults were discovered not only in the car but also in the organisation of the team.

Due to the results obtained by FUEM 01, the FUEM 02 was designed and developed further.

Due to the results obtained by the FUEM 01, more force was taken and the FUEM 02 was designed, which would be the reference model for the evolution of the car year after year. Carbon fiber was used for the first time in this car, thus creating a lighter chassis. In addition, that same year, an external professor, Rodrigo Martinez, was hired to give the project a technical form. In 2010 he did not go to Silverstone due to lack of time, but he did go to Mont Meló. This was the first year that the competition was held in Spain where only 11 teams attended. Today the world of the SF is gaining strength in our country

from the Polytechnic School, the Faculty of Arts and Communication and the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad Europea in Madrid, whose objective is the development of the UEM03. The 74 students were divided into 7 working groups led by a "team leader". In addition, each team has a "manager", who is responsible for the team's functions. The FormulaUEM team differs from the rest of the Universities participating in Formula Student in the following aspects:

Most universities only have students from polytechnic schools as team participants. In our team, as mentioned above, professors and students from different schools and faculties take part in order to make the most of its multidisciplinary educational nature and the development of the students' abilities.

The majority of Universities only accept final year students in the team. The FormulaUEM team values the educational nature of this activity and therefore...

WE ACCEPT STUDENTS OF ANY COURSE, This enhances the training and specialisation of the team over the course of the competitions.

As mentioned above, one of the strengths of the team lies in the multidisciplinary nature of the Academy Staff, professors who coordinate and direct the project using their extensive academic and work experience. The general coordination and representation of the University in the competitions is entrusted to the figure of the "Faculty Advisor" (Vicente Padilla), whose role in the official competitions is essential as he is responsible for the accuracy of the technical documents as well as for the safety and order of the team in each event.

In other words, Universidad Europea of Madrid has developed a courageous teaching innovation project that brings students closer to the professional world. For that, our students have not only participated in the daring programme of improvements in the construction of the UEM03 (for which up to 960 hours of training have been given in free courses on the handling of machines, tools, engines, etc.) but they have also worked in multidisciplinary work teams responsible for the execution of various functions such as the design of the bodywork, the diffusion of the FormulaUEM in the media, the participation in events, or the construction of brand name recognition, among other actions. All this, under the supervision and control of the teachers involved in this project, has provided our students with the necessary experience and knowledge to access the job market in optimal conditions. It is also an activity that reinforces the essential elements of our academic model:

  • The student is at the centre of the training process. Specifically,  FormulaUEM has been designed and carried out to promote the acquisition and development of students' skills through their participation in various tasks that require teamwork, integration of information, critical thinking, analytical skills, leadership, initiative, creativity and communication skills, among other aspects.

  • Internationality is promoted as our students compete with the best universities in the world, creating a pleasant atmosphere of exchange of experiences and even collaboration. Moreover, since all presentations are given in English, students are encouraged to develop their English language skills.

  • FormulaUEM is an engaging project that brings the real world closer to our students, which generates high motivation in the classroom and has a positive impact on the acquisition of skills and knowledge of the students involved in the team, which increases their academic performance.

In addition to this mandatory role in the competition, the five professors involved in FormulaUEM have the following responsibilities:

  1. Financial & Marketing Advisor: Veronica Baena- Consults and directs the group of students in all matters relating to branding, media coverage of the team and strategies to attract sponsors interested in investing in FormulaUEM.

  2. Acting Powertrain & Performances Advisor: Vicente Padilla. He advises and directs the team in all matters related to engine and transmission. He also determines the strategy for each dynamic event.

  3. Body&Design Advisor: Javier Sanz. He advises and directs the group of students in the design and construction of the bodywork as well as everything related to the aesthetics of the single-seater.

  4. Vehicle Advisor: Jaime Angulo. He provides guidance in everything related to the geometry of the vehicle.

  5. Manufactory Advisor: Daniel Gualoto. He advises the students on everything concerning the manufacture and build of the single-seater.

The same car was raced for the first time in Austria, a place to be remembered because it WAS THE FIRST TIME FUEM COMPETED WITH A NUMBER OTHER THAN 83.

The FUEM 03 could have been the last car as there was a lack of motivation at team level, neither the drive nor the money to be a competitive team were found. At this point it was Vicente Padilla who encouraged everyone to keep fighting and so the FUEM 04 was born. A new concept of car that sought to fix the flaws of the previous models.

The FUEM 04 was the first car to run on E85 (ethanol) and we were the only Spanish team to use this fuel for years until today.

Remarkable milestones:

  • In our category (internal combustion engine vehicles) we have been ranked as the second-best Spanish university.

  • In the absolute category, we have been ranked as the second-best Spanish university.

  • In EFFICIENCY our team has been ranked third in the world.

  • We have been the vehicle with the lowest fuel consumption of all the participants.

  • Our vehicle was the only Spanish vehicle using E85 fuel (bioethanol) and there were only 2 in the competition.

With FUEM 08, Universidad Europea will compete with the Formula UEM team in Formula Student, the biggest international motor racing event aimed at university students, which kicks off with the race at the Silverstone circuit on July 12. Through this initiative, of which it has been a part for many years and in which 80 students have participated this year, the Universidad Europea seeks to "bring the professional world closer to its students and thus strengthen their communication skills, teamwork and responsibility, applying the diverse knowledge acquired in the classroom", according to university sources.

FOR THE FIRST TIME

(2015-2016)

WE Participated in three competitions in the same season: Silverstone Circuit, Riccardo Paletti Circuit in July and Montmeló Circuit in August.

Precisely, this year the team has made, as they stated, "a very significant advance" in the structure of the FUEM 08 single-seater, leaving behind the steel pipe chassis, which has been replaced by an innovative carbon fibre mono shell, which has integrated the whole bodywork and developed a completely new design. Another new feature of this year's team is the creation of the Static Events and Media area, whose members are responsible for contacting current and future sponsors, negotiating contracts, structuring the team and organising all events related to the club or in which the club participates.

The FUEM 10 was born in 2017/2018=> during this year there was a general lack of motivation and the club declined a lot, it was not a good year in terms of work, which led to bad results in competitions.

Screenshot 2023-03-14 at 9.19.12.png

(2017-2018)

The FUEM 11 arrived in 2018/2019, during this season the formation of a parallel team with the creation of an electric car was considered but due to multiple factors it didn't come to fruition.

(2018-2019)

FUEM 12 is born in 2019/2020 => COVID Year
FUEM 13 2020/2021 => due to the high number of restrictions it was not possible to compete although work continued on the cars, due to lack of investment, the car itself continued to evolve.
